Spinal Manipulation Therapy - Treating Headaches - Migraines - Neck Pain

Headaches that occur occasionally can be an unpleasant nuisance, but a migraine is a completely differently situation. A migraine with throbbing pain, nausea, light sensitivity, and dizziness can put a screeching halt on any daily activity. Migraines are the result of an exaggerated contraction of blood vessels in the brain. These episodes can occur as a reaction to some foods, smells, or fluctuation in hormone levels. Studies have shown that migraines are seriously under- or misdiagnosed altogether. Persons suffering with migraines are prescribed medications or self medicate, to mask the pain without addressing the underlying problem. Migraine suffers may try some holistic solutions.

Journaling to bring awareness to environmental stimulus of migraine and then avoiding those stimuli can be extremely helpful in preventing a migraine. Some simpler measures than can be used during the onset of migraine can be taking a warm bath or shower, resting in a dark room, applying a cold compress to the forehead or back of the neck, drinking 100% fruit juice (especially tomato), and massaging the face, head, neck and shoulders. Also Vitamin B3, known as niacin, sometimes causes facial flushing. This facial flushing is caused by dilation of vessels to the face, which may relieve blood flow disruption that brings on migraines. Aromatherapy is also recommended, with application of essential oils to the “pressure points” on the face and neck. Try oil of peppermint, marjoram, and lavender.

Chiropractors have been aware that spinal alignment problems can cause headaches including episodic migraines. Spinal problems including reduced neck motility, forward head posture, and injured neck muscles from car accidents and sports injuries are all associated with headaches and migraines. Restrictions in the neck or spinal bones that are slightly out of place called vertebral subluxations cause the nerves to become irritated and can induce a migraine. Research shows that chiropractic care for vertebral subluxation has clear benefits for migraine suffers whose migraines are related to dysfunction in the spine of the neck.
